Yes, it IS wrong.
Typing out today's thought was a little difficult. This thought
has been around me for a while now, especially when I read #bodypositivity
#loveyourself #butylieswithin #stopbodyshaming, these hashtags drive me crazy. Yes,
I have been a victim to body shaming even without the knowledge of this concept.
It has been everywhere; school, neighbourhood, home, public places, you name it.
Something that started of a joke, something that was laughable has kind of
become a mild traumatic experience for me. For a long time, I could not look
into the mirrors, I would try and avoid them where ever I found them, I feared to
stand on the measuring scale, I hesitated to wearer certain clothes, I feared
to be a part of public events.
Everyone in school knew me as a tomboy, someone ready to
fight all the time, someone who stood up to the right no matter what, no matter
against who! But unfortunately, I could not stand up for myself. This is not any
justification for anything, this is just me trying to be transparent about
thing I have been through.
When we speak about anyone; friend, best
friend, collogue, classmate, sibling, parents, children, anybody in that case, first try and ask them if they are comfortable speaking about it. If it was okay for you made jokes on them, because you might not know but it might have caused a
deep wound in their self-confidence, it might cause a long-lasting psychological
effect on them.
Yes, this issue is not bound to only female gender, males too go through this. Its not just about how healthy or not it has also been about colour gender appearance in different aspects in that case. Its easy to say “Do not judge a book by its
cover” but a little heard to apply it in our daily life.
If you know anyone who is going through the same, help them,
talk to them, guide them. Anybody's condition is not caused due to eating habits, there could be any biological or also sometimes psychological causes, help them
get right guidance.
Back to me, I did consult professional help and changed my
lifestyle and lost around 24 pounds in about 3 months. Yes, it did give me
confidence, but it also hurts me when people don’t notice it and indeed extreme
joy when they do so. But to be honest all that it really takes is to accept
yourself in all means. Cheer your friends if they are insecure
or feeling bad about their appearance.
"Ultimately body is just a mere instrument all that matter
is love." (Sorry, that was the philosopher in me.)
Stand up for yourself,
YES, IT IS WRONG, LETS MAKE IT RIGHT.
Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts on body shaming. It is important to acknowledge the impact that body shaming can have on someone's self-confidence and mental health. Your suggestion of asking if someone is comfortable before making jokes or comments about their appearance is a great way to approach the situation. It is also important to remember that everyone's journey with their body is different and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Encouraging self-acceptance and love is a great message to spread. Thank you for standing up against body shaming and promoting positivity.
